What’s on for children, young people and families

There’s a host of events and activities for children and families this summer as part of our Summer of Play programme. Check out a few up-coming highlights below.

Free summer holiday food and fun activities for 5 to 16 year olds

The Southwark Food and Fun holiday programme runs until 27 August and is for those eligible for benefits-related free school meals. If you’re a parent or carer of children or young people that might benefit from healthy food and fun activities, contact the various providers to sign up.

Get your BMX skills up to an Olympic level in Burgess Park

If you’ve been inspired by Kye Whyte’s silver medal in the BMX racing last week, then book up at the track in Peckham where he trained. BMX Track London offers experienced coaching, equipment hire and bookable sessions for riders of all abilities.

Book for family yoga every Tuesday in Brunswick Park, Camberwell

Enjoy some active family time, improve your movement and fitness in the park every Tuesday from 10am to 10.45am, until 28 September. Book a free family yoga session in Brunswick Park, SE5.

Free family workshops and performances from Blue Elephant Theatre

The theatre is running free, bookable workshops and performances for children aged 2 to 10 years old in Elephant Park. Sessions include caring for the environment, exploring nature and numeracy and literacy skills, with some in Spanish.

A ‘Fine Day For Seeing’ at Southwark Park Galleries, SE16

The free exhibition celebrating words and images, pairs acclaimed poets and artists and is open 11am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Workshops and performances run until 29 August.

New play launches at the Golden Goose Theatre in Camberwell on 10 August

‘A Rat, A Rat’ features an all female cast and portrays character Charlie, a teenager being treated in an adult psychiatric unit, and reflects on how we as individuals care for one another. Book tickets from £12 for performances of A Rat, A Rat until 28 August.

Get an NHS COVID Pass to show you’ve been vaccinated, or results of a COVID-19 test

You may be asked to show a COVID Pass to get into some venues or to travel abroad. Find out how you can get an NHS COVID Pass to show your vaccination status or COVID-19 test results.

Vaccination walk-in sites in south east London

There are lots of ways to get a first or second dose, including at daily walk-in vaccine clinics at Guy’s and St Thomas’, and King’s College hospitals, plus other places across south east London. Check the website for full details and to see who offers free Moderna, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca vaccines. You don’t need to book, or provide proof of address, immigration status, ID or an NHS number.

Free: listen to jazz performances in Bermondsey Square 

Bermondsey Square Jazz supports aspiring and seasoned creative music talent. The line up of musicians changes at every event and the events are hosted by vocalist Stephen Pierre. From 2pm to 5pm on 1 and 15 August.

See …cake at Peckham Theatre

Book now for a psychological drama which unapologetically queers the existing complexities of family, roots and belonging; where power and duty dance in equal measure. Shows until Saturday 31 July and tickets from £10.

The Shakespeare’s Globe annual storytelling festival, Telling Tales, is back on stage this summer until 22 August. These storytelling performances will take you on a sensory, interactive adventure, giving younger audiences the chance to get into Shakespeare’s stories. Tickets: £12

Visit Elephant Springs: a new natural play area in SE1

Elephant springs is a new urban oasis in Elephant and Castle with rocks, streams, sand and water fountains. If you’re local, pop along for a unique experience.

Book now: holiday gymnastics club in Camberwell

Southwark Gymnastics Club is offering gymnastics sessions for children aged between 4 and 15 over the summer holidays, based in Brunswick Park School in Camberwell. Prices are £7.50 per session, but discounts are available.

Try Ellen Brown adventure playground

8 to 15-year-olds can head to Ellen Brown adventure playground in SE1 on any day until 27 August for open access, free and fun outdoor activities.

Join a Teddy Bears’ picnic in Canada Water

Let’s have lots of fun singing your favourite teddy bear rhymes and listening to wonderful stories. Bring your favourite teddy or soft toy and a little snack. 4 August 2021 11am to 11.45am. Free, booking essential.

Vaccination walk-in sites in south east London

There are lots of opportunities to still get your vaccine, including walk-in clinics at Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals every day (Pfizer, Moderna and Astrazeneca vaccines all available) and other places across Southwark and southeast London. You do not need proof of address, immigration status, ID or an NHS number.

You can also book your appointment via the NHS website.

Enjoy delicious food from local traders and a family-friendly line-up of free entertainment and workshops at The Blue in Bermondsey to celebrate the new and improved Market Place being back open for business and now featuring a striking new clock tower. From 12 noon to 4pm

Peveril Garden Studios opens

A new arts space and public roof garden launched this week at Peveril Garden, Bricklayers Arms. Commissioned by the council, the studios have been created by converting and refurbishing a 1960s building previously used for garages. Peveril Garden Studios will be operated by Forma Arts Media.

The Elephant Magazine Summer issue out now

Keep up to date with everything that’s happening in Elephant and Castle. The Elephant Magazine summer issue is out now and includes features on the new Southwark Heritage Centre and Walworth Library; local artist and musician, Natty Bo; and Elephant Springs, the new water feature at Elephant Park. Come and talk to us about life after COVID-19

Come and talk to a member of the team at our Blue Market stall on Wednesday 4 August between 10am to 4pm or you can complete our Life after Covid survey online. You can host an event yourself with your neighbours, faith group, community group or Tenant and Residents Association and we can offer support and some funding for you to do this.

Closure of the Burgess Park car park

The car park in Albany Road is closed for parking for the foreseeable future. The current COVID-19 testing facilities in the car park are temporarily closed whilst work is done to expand the facility. If you have COVID-19 symptoms you can book an appointment at a testing site in the borough.

Share your ideas on how we can redevelop the old PC World + B&M sites on Old Kent Road.

If you’re aged 8 to 17 you can take part in our summer wildlife photography competition

Try beach volleyball

Free of charge: young people can join in beach volleyball sessions and could even be picked to represent Southwark at the London Youth Games. Sessions continue until 23 August.

Try pond dipping and join a big butterfly count

Head to the free open day at Lavender Pond Nature Reserve on Saturday 24 July, 11am to 4pm. Activities include pond dipping, craft and a Big Butterfly Count at 2pm.

Dear resident,

Anyone aged 18 or over, who hasn’t had their first COVID-19 vaccine dose, can get vaccinated at Tate Modern this Friday. The Pfizer vaccine will be on offer.

Second doses of Pfizer will also be available to people who had their first dose eight weeks ago or longer.

Get your COVID-19 vaccination this week

COVID-19 rates are rising across London. It’s important to get vaccinated if you’re eligible and to keep getting tested regularly.

Over 40? Get your first or second dose at a walk-in clinic this week

There are walk-in vaccination clinics across Southwark this week for people aged 40+.

  • If you’re aged 40+ and have not have the COVID-19 vaccine you can get your first dose at
    a walk-in clinic this week.
  • You can also go to a walk-in clinic for your second dose if it is 8 weeks or more since your
    first AstraZeneca dose and you don’t have your second dose booked.
  • You don’t need an appointment and the vaccine is free to everyone.
  • You do not need proof of address, immigration status, ID or an NHS number.

Don’t miss your second COVID-19 vaccine dose

The Delta variant now makes up 96% of new cases. After only one dose, the vaccines are around 26% to 40% effective at reducing symptomatic disease from the Delta variant. After two doses, the vaccines are estimated to be between 76% and 84% effective against symptomatic disease.

If you book online, you’ll need to book appointments for both doses. If you have your first dose through your GP surgery, you’ll be contacted when it’s time to book your second dose.

The Ultra-Low Emission Zone expands from 25 October 2021. Have you checked your vehicle?

The central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding to create a single, larger zone up to (but not including) the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205). Four out of five cars already meet the ULEZ emissions standards but you can check your vehicle now.

Following the fire in Elephant & Castle on Monday our huge thanks go to the London Fire Brigade and the emergency services for all their efforts to keep everyone safe. Our thanks also go to residents for staying calm and to council officers who supported them.

Elephant and Castle statue returns

Elephant and Castle’s much-loved elephant statue was given a big welcome back on Saturday. The statue, which used to stand outside the shopping centre, has been restored and can now be found in Castle Square. The statue will stay at Castle Square while the new Elephant and Castle town centre development is completed. Find out more about the regeneration of Elephant and Castle.

There are increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in Southwark and it’s important we continue to get tested regularly, even if we’ve been vaccinated. If you don’t have symptoms there are different ways to get tested in Southwark:

How to book a test if you have symptoms of COVID-19

It’s essential that you get a PCR test as soon as possible if you have any of these symptoms:

  • a high temperature
  • a new, continuous cough
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

You and anyone you live with should stay at home until you get your test result. Only leave your home to have a test. Find out how to book a COVID-19 test at a local testing site or order a home testing kit.

Please keep following the rules

Despite the success of the vaccine rollout, COVID-19 cases are rising again in Southwark. It is vital that we continue to follow the current guidance. This means:

  • work at home if you can
  • washing our hands regularly
  • keeping our distance from others (only mixing inside in groups of up to six or two households)
  • wearing a face covering when required (unless you’re exempt).

The government has confirmed they plan to lift restrictions on 19 July. Check all the current rules.

Safer Streets Funding June 2021 – Stakeholder Consultation

The Home Office has just released Round 3 of the Safer Streets Fund. Southwark Council in conjunction with Met Police and other partners will be submitting a bid and would be really grateful for your views to help shape the submission. The key aims of the fund are to:

·       reduce violence against women and girls (VAWG) and increase women and girls’ feelings of safety in public spaces

·       build the evidence base for what works on reducing VAWG crimes and increasing feelings of safety in the public domain

·       improve both the national and local data picture regarding VAWG crimes in public spaces, which could include increased reporting for some crime types

·       make public spaces safer for all

A consultation meeting will be held via zoom on Thursday 24th June at 10am. You can join simply by logging on to the session on Thursday. There is no need to book in advance.

COVID-19 rates are rising in Southwark and across much of the country. Given the rising numbers nationally, the government has announced a pause in the roadmap out of lockdown so that more people can get vaccinated before we move to step 4. 

It’s important to get vaccinated if you’re eligible and to keep getting tested regularly.

Book your COVID-19 vaccination today

Everyone aged 18 or over can now book their COVID-19 vaccination.

Get your first COVID-19 vaccination at a walk-in clinic at Guy’s hospital

If you’re aged 40 or over and you’ve not had your first vaccination, come to Guy’s hospital on any day until the end of June, 8am to 7pm, to get an AstraZeneca vaccine. No need to book. You don’t need ID, an NHS number, proof of your address or immigration status.

New exciting adult learning courses starting in June

You can sign-up for one of our new courses starting this month: local history walks, textiles, upholstery, painting, digital photography, carving, creative writing and much more. Courses are available weekdays, evening and weekends.
