Old Kent Road Community Forum – 26th March.

The first Old Kent Road Community Forum meeting was held on the evening of 11 February 2015.  It was very well attended and there was some lively and interesting discussion.  The notes of the meeting are available below. Regular forum meetings will help establish an inclusive community ‘voice’ which represents the interests of all of the community, identifying views, aspirations and concerns, and it will help enable the community to become equipped with knowledge and skills to contribute to planning future improvements and growth in the area.

Old Kent Road community forum – workshop notes 11 February 2015

The second Community Forum meeting is scheduled on 26 March 2015. Once again we are inviting a mix of residents, local organisations, tenants groups, churches, mosques and businesses from all along the Old Kent Road and the surrounding area.  The workshop will include community led discussions about the future of the Old Kent Road, including:

  • guest speakers
  • community mind mapping
  • local history and character identification
  • improving the appearance of Old Kent Road

Southwark EnviroGrant – deadline 30th April

The Southwark EnviroGrant scheme has now reopened for its fifth year.

Established by Veolia – recycling and waste partners of Southwark Council – the scheme has been designed to support projects that enrich the local environment.

Community organisations, resident groups and schools in Southwark can apply for up to £1,000 to put towards their project along with the voluntary assistance of Veolia employees who can be on hand to build, clean, paint or plant as needed.

So far the Southwark EnviroGrant scheme has helped over 20 community projects in the borough and awarded over £13,000 to enable these schemes to happen. In 2015 we are particularly looking for applications with a strong ‘3R’s’ theme – for example events and projects that:

Reduce the amount of waste produced, such as cooking demos to encourage use of leftovers or community composting schemes

Reuse more of the things we throw away, such as ‘Give or Take’ days Swap Shops; Swishing or community garden makeovers that reuse materials for containers or furnishings
Recycle and reuse more materials – such as community clear out days or neighbourhood recycling champion schemes
Organisations or groups can apply for EnviroGrant funding by downloading an application online. The deadline for entries is 30 April 2015; for more information please visit:

Aylesbury Estate Residents Fight ‘Social Cleansing’

Residents of the Aylesbury Estate, unwillingly famous for its Channel 4 ident, are at the centre of a regeneration row with Southwark Council.

Like its now-demolished neighbour, the Heygate Estate, residents at the Aylesbury Estate are losing their homes in a deal between the local authority and Notting Hill Housing (NHH). Southwark calls it regeneration, the residents call it social cleansing.
