3 Films about South East London, 21st May from 2pm-5pm

Further to an award from the Bermondsey Square Community Fund, the Friends of Southwark Park will be running a free screening of three South-East London films at the Shortwave Cinema 10 Bermondsey Square, London SE1 3UN on Thursday 21st May from 2pm-5pm

The programme includes:

Wellbeloved’ (2014) directed by Stewart Morgan. The reputation of the steak pie has become diminished. It is time to rediscover the essential ingredients of this staple of traditional British cuisine. It is time to go to Deptford, South-East London.

‘It’s Our Park’ (2014) directed by Stewart Morgan for The Friends of Southwark Park to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Southwark Park Act 1864. Filmed largely in the park during last summer, it also contains some recently discovered footage of the old lido and other historic images.

‘We Was All One’ (1972) directed by Ken Ashton for Thames TV, which looks at the environment and lives of south Londoners some 40 years ago. Of special interest are vivid scenes of Bermondsey, including the community enjoying themselves in the Hand and Marigold pub, nearby Bermondsey Square. The documentary won the prestigious Prix D’Italia and was produced by Jeremy Isaacs. We hope cameraman Mike Doods will be joining us for the afternoon.

Shortwave Cinema seats about 50 people so please contact ourpark@live.co.uk to reserve a seat.

Ages – free tickets available!

Ages has been written by Alexandra Wood and features music from the newly formed London Community Gospel Choir. The play is inspired by the stories of over 200 people who took part in research workshops and debates over the past year
around the theme of ageing.
The show will run at a new space, The Old Vic Workrooms, which has been established in a disused college in Bermondsey. The space offers opportunities for local community work, educational programmes and emerging professionals, as well
as hosting the community productions.
Ages runs until May 10th, with the exception of May 1st and 8th; tickets are free. Many shows have sold out
but there are still some available to book. If you would like to come see this exciting and relevant new production

Email from BVAG: meeting, Wednesday 22nd April

Important meeting
Wednesday 22nd April 6.30pm Globe House

It is now only five weeks until Southwark run out of time for determining our application for NF status. Of course, our application was made some three years ago but the Council traded on the fact that there was no statutory time limit for determining applications until introduced by the Government in January to stop local authorities using the simplest method of avoiding meddling locals sticking their nose into the furtive and lucrative business of planning.

The Council have been reduced to contriving some basis for refusal. Rather clutching at straws they have come up with:
1.We are not representative enough
2. Our constitution is not good enough
3. We must think the Council’s own planning policy is incapable of improvement

After numerous invitations the Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, Mark Williams has agreed to attend our meeting, on Wednesday 22nd April, accompanied by Head of Planning, Simon Bevan, to explain what we will need to do to meet the Council’s high standards of community engagement and responsiveness.

Of course, if the meeting is unimpressed by the reasoning of Messrs Williams and Bevan – not an unknown reaction – it may come to them explaining how they are legally empowered to refuse our application.

Unless they can find the excuse they are looking for our application will have to be approved by 25th May 2015. Thereafter we will finally be able to get on with what we started three years ago and introduce some local wishes and initiatives to shape our immediate environment.

This meeting not to be missed. All welcome.
