If you’re a council tenant and you sign up for a MySouthwark account you can check your rent balance, view the charges that make up your rent and pay online. You can also switch to paperless rent statements and help us reduce our carbon footprint.

Half-term fun for children!

The tiger who came to the library (13 to 17 February)

A big stripy friend will visit libraries over half term. We’ll be reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr and making our own fancy cups and saucers. No need to book, but entry on a first-come, first-served basis (suitable for ages two to six).

Free family fun with fabrics at Tate Modern

UNIQLO Tate Play is Tate Modern’s new free programme of art, activities and play for families of all ages. During half-term (from 11 to 19 February) you can join in knitting and weaving to create a big cylinder-shaped textile artwork.

Nature detectives in East Dulwich

A free two-day course (13 and 14 February) for children and their adult parent or carer. Investigate tracks in the garden, make your own track cast. and set up a camera, footprint and moth trap. Free, but £3 deposit. The same adult must attend both days.

Kids go free: See The Wizard of Oz in Rotherhithe

Four children can go free with a paying adult (£20 plus booking fee) to see performances of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in February at the Hithe Theatre in Rotherhithe, SE16. It’s a family show, suitable for all ages.

Free bike checks in London Bridge on 21 February

If you cycle into London Bridge and your bike could do with a safety check, drop by Colechurch House from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Experienced bike mechanics will check everything from wheels, brakes, gears, tyre pressure, lights, and more.

Free talk at Camberwell Library: Out loud – a history of LGBTQ+ people and public libraries

In this free talk, on 16 February at 6.30pm at Camberwell Library, librarian Isadore will talk about the history of public libraries as both havens for, and censors of, LGBTQ+ material. Audience members can also share their own experiences if they wish.

See The Walworth Farce in a new theatre in Elephant and Castle (tickets from £16)

A brand new 300-seat theatre, Southwark Playhouse Elephant, has opened in Elephant and Castle. It launches with a production of The Walworth Farce, starring Dan Renton Skinner, best known for his TV comedy character Angelos Epithemiou.

Cost of living help

1. Come to a cost-of-living advice session in SE16

You can get advice from Citizens’ Advice, the council and JobCentre Plus on energy bills, welfare support, benefit payments, rent and council tax arrears, and more. Drop in anytime between 10am and 1pm on 23 February, at Cherry Gardens TRA Hall, 210 Jamaica Road, SE16 4RT.

COVID-19 boosters: last chance to get protected

If you’re eligible for a winter booster then you’ve got until 12 February to get your booster. You’re eligible if you’re aged 50 or over, in an at-risk group or pregnant. If you’ve not yet had a 1st or 2nd vaccine, you can still get vaccinated at any time.

Get medicines or health care advice free from your local pharmacy

You can get professional health care advice, treatments, and medicines for common illnesses from some local pharmacies, without the need for an appointment. If you don’t pay for your prescriptions, any medicine recommended to you will be free.

Our Southwark Climate Day event is on 11 March at London Southbank University. Speakers include the High commissioner for Fiji – a nation that’s very vulnerable to the effects of climate change. There will also be practical workshops to help us tackle the climate emergency together.

£50k available for projects in Elephant and Castle

Community groups working with people in Elephant and Castle can now apply for grants from a £50k fund aimed at projects that promote health and wellbeing, help young people, provide training, or that help with the cost of living and sustainability.

Free: inclusive sport and physical activity event

Help end cervical cancer

All women and people with a cervix between the ages of 25 and 64 should go for regular cervical screening. You’ll get a letter inviting you to make an appointment.

Children who are 12 to 13 years old will be invited to have a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination through their school. HPV can cause several types of cancer, including most cervical cancers.

Do you enjoy dancing? Whether it’s in front of the TV, in a ballroom or in your favourite club we want to hear from you.

Team London Bridge invites you join award winning dance artist Dickson Mbi to learn a simple and beautiful dance by the world famous Pina Bausch.

Have fun learning the moves before you are filmed in stunning locations around London Bridge. The film will then be sent out far and wide alongside other Nelken Line films from around the world.

Independent Review of Engagement in Southwark

Apologies for any cross posting.

The council is currently conducting an independent review of the way we engage with residents. An online questionnaire went live yesterday and we are seeking your assistance in circulating it as widely as possible so that everyone can have their voice heard. This is the link:

Southwark is an exciting place to live, and we want everyone who lives here to have a say in their home borough, in how it evolves, and how the council invests its time, energy and resources. We already have a number of ways for local people to get involved in our conversations and decisions, but in the fast-paced world we live in, we want to make sure that the opportunities to get involved are open to as many people as possible. We want to improve how we involve council tenants, council homeowners and leaseholders in Southwark in decisions about their homes and neighbourhood, and we would like more people to be involved in making their estates even better places to live.

We already work closely with residents through Tenants and Residents Associations and there are a number of borough-wide and local opportunities for us to meet with representatives of tenants and homeowners to discuss both what is happening in your area as well as policies and concerns that affect all of Southwark. However, we know not everyone has a say, and we would like to make sure everyone can make their voices heard.

We want to know what you think about what we do now, what works well, what could be improved and what you think we can do to make it easier for you to take part.

By completing our survey you will help us to develop ideas about how we can we can do better. This survey will be just one of many ways we will gather information about what you think about the opportunities to get involved. We will also be holding focus groups, speaking to people face to face and researching what happens in other places.

Your voice will help shape the future of resident involvement.

TOMORROW – Free Event for Women and Girls at the Livesey Exchange

Free workshop session tomorrow afternoon for International Women’s Day 2017. This is a free event for girls to make their own toolbox and will be an excellent opportunity to learn some basic skills, make new friends, find out what is happening at the Livesey Exchange and go home with your own toolbox!

Child sexual exploitation workshop for people from T&RAs in Southwark

Dear Residents,

Invitation to a workshop for people from Tenant and Resident Associations in Southwark Council

Please reply to Kevin Dykes (contact details below) to say if you would like to attend the workshop. If there is no space this time we will keep you informed of future opportunities to get involved.

The small group workshop will be for about 10 people to have an in depth discussion about child sexual exploitation. Everyone will have the chance to talk about their ideas.

The government has said that the harmful effects of child sexual exploitation are serious and far-reaching for victims, their families and wider communities. The ideal is therefore to prevent the abuse happening in the first place.

To prevent the abuse happening in the first place we need to educate young people, parents & carers, and all of the local community.

Southwark Council is determined to educate people about child sexual exploitation, so that we all know the things to look out for and where to report concerns.

We would like your help to work out how to do this, and to work on the role the tenant and resident associations can play.
