New places available for Tabard Drama group

Thank you for your interest in the Unicorn Theatre’s Tabard Gardens community-based Drama group.

The Unicorn Theatre is a leading children’s theatre based on Tooley Street, London Bridge.

The Drama group is offered FREE to children living on the Tabard Gardens council estate and to children from local neighbouring council estates close to Tabard Gardens. The Drama group runs term-time after school one afternoon a week at St George the Martyr Church, Borough High Street, SE1. The Unicorn Theatre runs community projects throughout the year and we want to run a community project that connects with a local community near to our theatre.

Children do not need previous Drama experience – we would love to meet some children who want to give it a go for the first time. There are so many positive benefits in taking part in a regular Drama group including- social benefits, developing confidence and communication skills, learning to think creatively, and learning about theatre arts for self-expression.

The group runs term-time weekly on Tuesdays from 16.30 – 17.45 in the Crypt at St George the Martyr Church. The group is open to 8-11 year olds.

Term dates for spring: Tuesday 17th January – Tuesday 28th March 2016 (the group will not run on Tuesday 14th Feb during half-term)

The children will also be invited to attend free theatre trips at the Unicorn Theatre to extend their experience and enjoyment.

In order to register your interest – please contact Sally Pembroke with your name, child’s name, child’s age (D.O.B), full address and how you heard about the opportunity.  Please note, you need to book via Sally and fill out application forms before your child can start attending the drama group. Please check you are eligible within the criteria or contact Sally. Please note there are limited places and places will be reserved on a first come first serve basis.

Your Muslim neighbours invite you for an afternoon TEA & TOUR at your local Mosque.

We are delighted to inform the return of our 4th Tea & Tour in partnership with the Harper Road Mosque. This is also part of the national Visit My Mosque initiative by Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

Please join us for an afternoon tea at the Harper Road Mosque on Sunday 12th February 2017. Just pop by anytime that suits you between midday and 5.30pm. Biscuits and yummy snacks will be served and guided tours of the mosque provided. We’ll also have a little Islam Exhibition on display. We hope 2017 is the year for voices to be heard and for our Neighbourhood Plan to reach fruition after so many years of effort.

Election of Officers

According to our constitution we need to elect our Coordinator, Chair, Secretary and a Treasurer annually at the first meeting of the year.  Please can we have any volunteers or nominations in advance if possible.  Otherwise nominations can be made at the meeting.

Neighbourhood Plan – next draft

Most important on the agenda for this meeting is the reworking of the draft plan policies to bring them into compliance with the feedback from the Council as far as is possible and reasonable.  In some cases this is simple, in others we may want to challenge the Council on their comments.  The working groups who compiled the original policies per their special interests have been invited to consider how far they can amend their proposals to meet any Council objections.  We hope that they will be able to do so in some instances and the meeting will consider how far we can and how far we resist the council’s steer.

Please come to the meeting with considered opinions on what the Council have said about your own areas of policy interest. Better still, please go to the document on our website (click here for the full document) and use the format to propose any amendments to the policies that may help bring them into a form that either satisfies the Council or which we should resolve to stand by against their opposition. Neighbourhood Area extension – getting it approved

Several of the Council’s comments on our plan rely on the fact that they have not yet processed our application to amend our geographical area to a more cohesive and manageable one, more like that we originally proposed.  While the Council resist this many of our core policies stand to be challenged on the basis that they need to reach outside of our designated area.

Former Ticino Bakery 176-178 Bermondsey Street – Frontier Estates’ planning application

This application raises issues that bear on both our draft policies for Bermondsey St itself and the Conservation Area.  In this respect, the Forum should consider making some representations to the Council with regard to respecting some of our fledgling policies – which they say they already support.  BVAG has particular concerns about how conservation principles are being applied with respect to this application and members will consider a collective response to the current consultation.

There is a cold weather alert for the next few days so please note this info and spread the word to look out for your elderly and vulnerable neighbours. Many thanks! Brian

Please remember to keep warm and safe.

You can keep your home warm – efficiently and safely by :

  • Heating your home to at least 18⁰C in winter
  • Getting your heating system and cooking appliances checked and keep your home well ventilated
  • Use your electric blanket as instructed and get it tested every three years. Never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket.
  • Do not use a gas cooker or oven to heat your home; it is inefficient and there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and this can kill.
  • Make sure you have a supply of heating oil or LPG or solid fuel if you are not on mains gas or electricity – to make sure you do not run out in winter.

Elderly and vulnerable residents

Southwark and Lambeth Councils have teamed up to deliver the Lambeth and Southwark Winter Well-Being (LSWWB) programme to help more vulnerable residents stay safe and well in their own homes and reduce re-admissions to hospital.

The programme includes three main areas:

  • Safe and Independent Living (SAIL) that provides a quick and easy way to access a wide range of local services, co-ordinated by Age UK Lewisham and Southwark. The service has already been established in Southwark and will be rolled out to Lambeth by Age UK Lambeth
  • The Red Cross Hospital Discharge is commissioned by and operates from Kings College Hospital to support patients going hospital from both emergency department and in-patients wards. The service already provides up to six weeks post discharge support for patients in their own communities and the new LSWWB will extend this to eight weeks as well as extending it to include St Thomas’s hospital
  • Warm and Well in Winter is a successful winter health project delivered by Age UK Lambeth which uses local community and faith groups to promote practical messages about staying healthy, such as promoting flu vaccinations, and preventing isolation. LSWWB will see the project roll out to Southwark with Age UK Lewisham and Southwark

Refuse collection

During this period of bad weather, we are attempting to collect household waste and recycling as normal.

However, due to the severe weather conditions there may be some properties where we are unable to make a collection.  If this happens at your property, please be assured that your collection will be rescheduled and undertaken as soon as possible, once the weather improves.

Unless you think that it is only your waste that has not been collected and that your neighbours’ waste has been removed, there is no need to call the Council to report the issue as our crews will keep detailed records of roads where collections could not take place.

Parks

During icy and snowy weather the parks service will endeavour to open the locked parks by 7.30 am, but please bear with us during difficult weather conditions. We grit pathways in our parks on a priority basis, gritting main pedestrian and commuter/school routes first.

Please note that in extreme weather car parks and carriageways may remain closed to vehicles. Please take extra care after dark and try to only use main, pedestrian street routes if at all possible.

Rough sleepers

If you have any concerns about individuals sleeping rough or using the street unsafely in Southwark please contact via email streetconcern@mungos.org or call 020 7902 7941. The street population outreact team(SPOT) will respond to information provided.

Check the websites of transport providers for information on changes or disruption to services:
