Neighbourhood Plan Meeting Wednesday 12th November at 7.00 pm

Message from BVAG (Bermondsey Village Action Group · 14 Crucifix Lane · London Bridge · London, London SE1 3JW)

“Neighbourhood Plan – Watershed Meeting Wednesday 12 November at 7.00 pmGlobe House

As most of our followers are very aware, Southwark Council have been doing whatever they can to prevent local people from having the power to influence local planning policy that is conferred upon us by the Localism Act. The reasons are also well known: They have plans for St Thomas St and its immediate surroundings that they don’t want local people having anything to do with. Those plans are exemplified by the history of the fantasy ‘Quill’ building in St Thomas St.

Plan A for stopping us was simply to delay for two or three years in processing our application. That works well for as long they can pull it off: Challenging the delay in court would simply increase the effectiveness of their tactic because of the delay in the courts themselves. And what court would reject their defence that they are simply incompetent and inefficient, rather than perverse?

As central government started to recognise how easily local authorities can undermine neighbourhood planning through delay, the Council has had to resort to Plan B. This was to refuse our application for recognition as a Neighbourhood Forum and instead designate an area for which there is no applicant group.

The planners have of course always known that eventually plan A would become unsustainable and hence they were well prepared with plan B. They have always pretended there were such entrenched divisions within the community that – being exemplars of harmony and collaboration – they could not with clear conscience approve any application. Of course, nobody believes this either but the beauty of being in power is that you can do what you want with any lame excuse until a court stops you.

Faced with the prospect of plan B buying them another couple of years of delay, the community needs to bury the charade it relies upon: divisions in the neighbourhood. To put this line to bed once and for all and to allow the community to have at least some local plan, the two ‘groups’ that the Council uses for its ‘divisions’ line have agreed to hold a combined meeting at which their own members and the community at large can select one group to go forward.

Next Wednesday’s meeting will therefore give the community the chance to unlock community planning in our area by selecting either the St Thomas St Plan (coordinated by BVAG) or the Bermondsey Neighbourhood Forum as their preferred applicant for designation. The other group will then be formally wound up by its members. Once they can no longer plead paralysing divisions in the community the Council will have no alternative but to approve a local planning group and it will finally be possible to produce a local plan for our area.

For complete independence the meeting will be chaired by Grange ward councillor, Damian O’Brien.

Come and have your say; finally it will be decisive”

Wrap up warm for Southwark Council’s annual fireworks display, back with a bang this November as we light up the skies over Southwark Park during a special Fireworks Night event.

There will be a whole host of things happening on the night to keep you entertained: pop tunes, fire and light circus performances, and a family funfair. Hot drinks and food and luminous paraphernalia will all be available to buy on-site.

The gates will be open from 5pm with the main display at 7pm.

Try to arrive early. Because of the numbers of people who want to see Southwark’s fireworks it takes a long time to access the site through the gates. The earlier you arrive the more likely you are to get a great view and avoid the long queues.

Please note: we encourage you to take advantage of this free event and leave the fireworks to those specially trained to handle them. Fireworks are a cause of serious fires and injuries every year when not used responsibly and can be very dangerous to the user and others around them.

Older People’s Information Directory

age uk lambethcare shaped

Age UK Lambeth has compiled an Older People’s Information Directory for older people in Lambeth and Southwark. It contains details of services and support for older people; for use by professionals, service users and their carers.

What is it for?
The aim of the directory is to help health and social care professionals look beyond their immediate sphere of influence, understand service configuration in a new way and keep up with the pace of change. It will enable improvements in support for older people and their carers in relation to preventing and reducing the impact of crises which could result in admittance to acute hospital services or residential care packages. It also aims to promote smaller voluntary and community groups, and some relevant businesses, so that more older people are aware of the support available locally. There is no fee to have an organisation represented on the directory, and Age UK Lambeth will not sell on any information.

How do I use it?
The Older People’s Information Directory is a website designed to make accessing information as simple and straightforward as possible. It is publicly accessible and searchable, or you can also view by category such as “Staying Active”, or in an A-Z list. Each listing can be viewed in more detail with links to related information such as factsheets. Users can also save favourite pages within the Older People’s Information Directory and print or email them to others.
The directory has a collection of various local and national services ranging from housing to social clubs but is initially focussed on the health topics set out by Southwark and Lambeth Integrated Care (dementia, nutrition, falls and infections).

How will it be kept accurate?
The directory has staff dedicated to building up the information on services and checking that the information is up-to-date. There is also an “issue” button alongside each entry so that users of the directory can let staff know of any updates or problems with the entry.

Can I use it now?
Yes – the directory can be accessed through the Age UK Lambeth website homepage or on http://directory.ageuklambeth.org.uk/ You are welcome to use it and feedback on the directory is very welcome.

Please contact Rose Booker on 020 7733 0528 or rose.booker@ageuklambeth.org.uk for further information.

Does private renting in Southwark need to change?

Southwark Council is proposing to license more properties including shared houses to reduce antisocial behaviour and improve the management and conditions of rented homes. The council s proposing to:

  1. Introducing a scheme which requires some landlords to license their property. We propose to do this in particular areas first where there is more antisocial behaviour. This is called selective licensing.
  2. Make all houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) have a licence no matter how small they are. This is called additional licensing.

Please take five minutes to fill in the questionnaire and tell us what you think at http://www.southwark.gov.uk/talkrent to help shape the future of private renting in Southwark #talkrent. This may affect homes that are let by homeowners on council estates too.
